I will recruit and train teams of parents in providing behavioral interventions for students. These teams will reduce school suspensions.
In many schools, children get suspended or sent out of classrooms too often for relatively minor infractions. The result is that parents are called at work but not allowed to intervene to prevent a suspension from happening. Schools should have teams of parents available, who are paid for their time, to come to a school to assist in behavioral interventions that will allow a child with a minor behavioral issue to stay at school for the day rather than be suspended.
How Winning Will Help
Funds would be used to train teams of parents on specific areas of intervention. A licensed behavioral health professional / psychotherapist would supervise parents to do effective interventions for classroom behavioral issues, allowing children to avoid suspension from school. Additional funds to support the program would be sought from corporate sponsors to pay parents. With teams of parents available for in-school work, some would not have to hold other jobs that would prevent their involvement in their community-based schools.
More About Fannie LeFlore
I am parent, licensed psychotherapist and social entrepreneur. My experience has been that schools have gone to extremes in handling minor disciplinary issues, often using suspensions inappropriately. This makes parents angry because they are not heard when they want alternatives. They feel alienated from schools that “criminalize” routine childhood pranks or relatively minor behaviors. I do have supporters locally who are concerned about unnecessary school suspensions.
My idea is in the formation stage and would require a pilot/testing period before launching on a larger scale within the community. I also have research information about how too many school suspensions result in children falling behind academically or not graduating from school. Children will benefit because there will be immediate intervention and an opportunity for corrective action and discussion to learn from a situation. Parents will be part of teams with an active role in supporting both children and teachers at their school. Parents will be an invaluable resource to teachers.
